Knowing When A Split System Is Due For Replacement
Most split systems installed properly into a Melbourne home will give the household between ten and fifteen years of comfortable use before they start to ask the question of repair versus replace. After that, the conversation usually shifts. Compressors that have been running a decade or longer start to lose efficiency, refrigerants used in older units have become harder and more expensive to source, and the electronics that drive the inverter side begin to behave erratically.
Households tend to notice it as a unit that runs harder for longer, a room that takes far longer to come up to temperature than it used to, or a system that drips, smells musty after a clean, or trips out in the middle of a cold snap.
When a customer rings us about a split that is misbehaving, the first conversation is whether the unit genuinely needs replacing or whether a service call would be the better starting point. The honest answer depends on the age, the brand, the refrigerant the system runs on, and how the unit has been maintained over its life. If the unit is past twelve years old, the refrigerant is pre-phase-out, and the issues are starting to compound across the compressor, the electronics or the mounting hardware, replacement is usually the better economic call than chasing a repair on a system that is already on borrowed time.

Why Replacement Quotes Are Not Just Like-For-Like
The most common assumption homeowners bring to a replacement is that the new unit should match the old one in size, brand and position. It is an understandable starting point, but it skips over the fact that the original install was sized to a different version of the home, sometimes a decade or more ago. Walls have come down to open up living spaces, insulation and double glazing have been added, window furnishings have changed, rooms have been repurposed from studies to nurseries or from garages to living rooms. All of those changes shift the cooling and heating load on the unit, which means the size that was right when the original was installed is rarely the size that is right now.
A correctly sized replacement runs less, lasts longer, and keeps the room more comfortable. An oversized replacement cycles on and off too quickly to dehumidify properly and leaves the room clammy on warm days. An undersized replacement runs flat out and never quite gets there. Sizing a replacement properly is half the job, and it is the half that is hardest to get right by looking at a wall mark and matching kilowatts off a spec sheet. On every replacement we quote, the sizing starts from the room, not from what came off the wall.
Single-Head And Multi-Head Replacements
A single-head replacement is the simpler of the two jobs, and the most common one we see. One indoor head, one outdoor compressor, swapped out in roughly half a day to one day depending on access. The existing copper pipework and drain run are usually sound enough to carry across to the new unit, and the wall mount can often be reused depending on the new unit’s footprint. The bigger consideration on a single-head replacement is whether the original install was tidy enough to extend, or whether the swap is a chance to redo a job that was not done well the first time.
A multi-head replacement is a different conversation. One outdoor unit feeds two to five indoor heads, and when one part of the system fails the question becomes whether the rest is healthy enough to keep. In some cases, where the indoor heads are matched, modern and in good shape, the right answer is to replace only the outdoor unit and bring the system back to full warranty. In others, especially where the indoor heads are old and the failure is symptomatic of a wider problem, a full system replacement makes more sense because every head ends up with the same warranty start date and matched performance.
The right answer depends on the brand, the age of the heads, and how the original system was put together. We give the household both options where both are realistic.
Brands We Replace To, And How We Handle The Old Unit
On the cooling and reverse cycle side, Savage Air is an authorised installer for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Hisense, Panasonic and Fujitsu. Those are the five brands we recommend, quote and stand behind on replacements. Where the existing system in the home is a different brand, the replacement still works the same way for the household, the new unit is simply chosen from the five above.
Refrigerant work on every replacement is carried out under our ARC licence (AU52122), which Australian law requires for any installer handling refrigerant in a domestic split system. The old indoor and outdoor units are removed from the property at the end of the install and dealt with through licensed channels, which is the part of the job most homeowners do not see but is the reason ARC licensing exists.
Replacements That Qualify For The VEU Rebate
Some split system replacements in Victoria are eligible for the Victorian Energy Upgrades rebate, particularly where the household is replacing an old electric resistance heater or an inefficient air conditioner with a new high-efficiency reverse cycle unit. The amount and the eligibility depend on the household, the postcode, the product chosen, and the way the upgrade is structured. Where the job qualifies, we will let you know up front and walk you through the path. We do not quote rebate amounts on cold calls because the discount changes from one job to the next.
For the full picture on the rebate side, see the Split System VEU Rebate page.
How A Savage Air Replacement Runs
Every replacement starts with a free in-home quote. The team comes to the property, looks at the existing install, measures the room, checks the position of the outdoor unit and the state of the wiring, and recommends a right-sized replacement with a fixed price written down.
On the day of the install, the old unit is removed, the new unit is sized, mounted and commissioned by the same crew from start to finish under our ARC licence (AU52122), and the system is walked through with the household before the team leaves the property. Every replacement is backed by our lifetime workmanship guarantee, and the manufacturer warranty (up to 7 years on selected brands) is registered in the household’s name at commissioning.
