Replacing The Heater, Keeping The Ducts

Ducted heating unit replacement is the right call when the heater has reached end of life but the ductwork still has a solid run ahead of it. Old unit out, new unit in, existing ducts stay where they are.

Most homes that go down this path are gas ducted. Two scenarios cover almost all of it. Like-for-like, where the gas heater is replaced with another gas heater on the existing ducts. Gas to electric, where the gas heater is retired and a reverse cycle electric ducted unit is installed on the existing ducts, which gives the home both heating and cooling from one install. If your home qualifies for the VEU rebate on the gas-to-electric path, we will let you know up front and walk you through the path.

The one variable is whether the existing ducts are actually fit for the new unit. Reverse cycle systems need higher airflow than gas heaters. Sometimes the existing ducts handle it, sometimes they need work, sometimes the answer is a full ducted replacement (new unit and new ducts). We will tell you which side your home sits on before quoting.

Gas To Electric On Existing Ducts

Retire the gas heater, install a reverse cycle electric ducted unit, keep the existing ducts. One install handles both seasons. VEU rebate available on eligible jobs. We confirm the ducts are fit for the new unit before quoting.

When The Ducts Need Replacing Too

Honest Inspection First, Quote Second

Every unit replacement starts with an honest look at the existing ductwork. Insulation condition, sizing, fit for the new unit. If everything checks out, we replace the unit and leave the ducts in place. If something needs attention, we tell you up front and you decide whether to scope it in or take the full ducted replacement path.

For gas-to-electric jobs we also check the electrical capacity at the switchboard and the outdoor unit position before quoting. Reverse cycle units need different siting and different electrical supply to gas heaters, and we will not commit to a quote before we have confirmed both work for your home.

Gas To Gas Or Gas To Electric

The honest comparison most owners need at replacement time:

Like-for-like gas replacement: Suits homes that want to stay on gas, have a working gas connection, and where the existing ducts and gas supply are fit for a new heater. Familiar system, fast warm-up, no electrical upgrade required.

Gas to electric reverse cycle: Suits homes ready to retire gas. Connection fees, usage charges and supply costs on gas have all gone up. The same install gives you cooling for summer, which most gas-ducted homes currently run as a separate system. VEU rebate brings the upfront cost down on eligible jobs. Victoria new build gas is phasing out in 2027 which makes electric the long-term default.

The duct question: Either path depends on the existing ducts being fit. If they are not, full ducted replacement (new unit and new ducts) is the better long-term answer. We will not install onto ductwork that will hold the new unit back.

Who We Work With

Most ducted heating unit replacements fall into one of three buckets:

End-of-life gas replacement. Older gas heater that has failed or is near it. Owner wants to stay on gas. Like-for-like swap.

Gas-to-electric switch. Gas heater near end of life, owner ready to retire gas. Reverse cycle electric ducted installed on the existing ducts (if they suit). VEU rebate path where the job qualifies.

Unit failure on otherwise sound system. Recent enough ducts in good condition, heater has failed earlier than expected. Either gas or electric path is on the table depending on the home.

The ducting we install is insulated flexible duct sourced from established Australian suppliers and rated to current R-value standards. Outlets and registers can be standard white floor or ceiling registers for an unobtrusive finish, linear bar grilles for newer builds where the look matters, or round ceiling diffusers for vaulted ceilings.

On the heater side, Savage Air is an authorised installer for Braemar and Braemar Dominator on the gas ducted heating range, so when the duct replacement is being paired with a heater swap or a heater service, the recommendation comes from those brands. Brivis, Bonaire, Rinnai and Actron Air heaters are not part of our brand range, which means where the existing heater is one of those, we are happy to handle the duct replacement and leave the heater itself to whoever the household uses for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my existing ducts carry a reverse cycle unit?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Reverse cycle systems need higher airflow than gas heaters, which often means larger ducts and different layouts. If the existing ducts are reasonably sized and in good condition, they can carry the new unit. If they are tired, undersized, or poorly laid out, the new unit will be held back by them. We inspect the ductwork before we quote and we will be upfront about what works. If full ducted replacement is the better long-term answer for your home we will say so rather than putting in a new unit onto ductwork that will not let it perform.

Does the VEU rebate apply to gas-to-electric unit replacement?

Sometimes. The VEU rebate applies to specific gas-to-electric upgrades that meet the program rules. Eligibility depends on the equipment installed, the existing system being retired, and the address. Where the job qualifies, we will let you know up front and walk you through the path, including handling the recycling certificate for the old unit and the rebate paperwork. Where it does not qualify we will tell you that too rather than hinting at a rebate that will not land.
