Two More Cooling Paths Worth Knowing

Beyond split, ducted and reverse cycle there are two more cooling paths that suit specific situations.

Evaporative cooling: A whole-home system that draws outside air through wet pads to cool the home. Lower running cost than refrigerated cooling on dry days, suits homes in drier parts of Melbourne, and works best with windows partially open. Not the right answer for humid conditions.

Add-on cooling: If you already have ducted heating in good condition and you only want cooling added through the same ducts, add-on cooling is the smarter spend than replacing the whole system. Works when the heater has years of life left and the ducts are sound.

Split System: One or two rooms to cool, or rooms used at different times. Cheapest entry point, easy to add later.

Ducted Air Conditioning: Larger homes, new builds, or you already have ducts for heating. Whole-home comfort, one controller.

Reverse Cycle Ducted Electric: Heating and cooling from one install. Standard for new builds with gas phasing out. VEU rebate available on eligible gas-to-electric jobs. Where the job qualifies, we will let you know up front and walk you through the path.

Evaporative: Whole-home cooling at lower running cost on dry days. Suits drier Melbourne homes, not humid ones.

Will add-on cooling work with any ducted heater?

Most of the time, but not always. The existing ductwork needs to be sound and sized so it can carry the cooling load. If the ducts are tired or undersized, the cooling system will struggle even when the unit itself is rated correctly. We inspect the existing system before we quote and we will be upfront about what works and what does not. If the home is better served by a full reverse cycle changeover we will say so.

Is add-on cooling cheaper than a full ducted air conditioning system?

Up front, usually yes, because you keep the existing heater and ductwork instead of replacing everything. Over time the comparison depends on how long the heater has left. If the heater fails a few years after the add-on cooling goes in, you pay twice. If the heater has a solid run ahead of it, the add-on is the cheaper path. We will give you the honest read for your home, not the upsell.
